Auroa Primary School students Holiday work - Rm 3

While it may be the school holidays here in New Zealand that hasn't stopped students from Auroa Primary School posting regularly during the school holidays. Those of you who are regular followers of this blog will have seen students like Tom posting as well as posts during the break from Riley, Blake, Heavenlee and Lucas and more. Emily has just posted a special post asking for photographs from students holidays or what students are doing at the moment if not on holidays. Miss Nicholas from Room Eight at Auroa Primary School has already started doing this and you can see some of her contributions here.

But did you also know that there are other students at Auroa Primary School posting during the break? If you click on the links to Rooms 2, Rooms 3 and Rooms 4 you can go to the class page and see the individual student blogs listed on the right hand side, altogether we have over 120 blogs
for our classrooms and  students.

Today we'd like to highlight some of the students from Room Three, Auroa Primary School.

Mr Spice has an amazing class page.  You can also see some sensational work from his year 5/6 students.   Abby has written an impressive report about ANZAC day dawn service at Manaia.  Jade wrote about her holiday in Rotorua.  You can see snaps of Katelyns holiday here.

You can click on all the hyperlinked work above or simply go directly to the class page.  Remember to make sure that you leave comments to the students blogs that you visit.

The students from Room One, Auroa Primary School, will be back online and in the classroom this coming Monday 5th May look forward to seeing you all then.

Toms Adventures Continues: Blokarting at Oakura Beach

Our students continue to be on their break, returning to school on Monday 5th May 2014. In the meantime just because its the holidays does not mean that the students of Auroa Primary School are not working and posting. Tom just the other day had an amazing post on his blog about the Kayaking that he did on the Whanganui River - and yesterday on his amazing blog he just posted this fantastic video of himself and his Dad with their Blokart. You can click on the original link here.

Auroa Primary School - House Tokens for Photos: Rm 8

While its the holidays in New Zealand, and our students will be returning to school shortly with our first day back being Monday 5th May, in the meantime there are some tasks to complete. A number of you have continued to post regularly on your blogs, we've had some of the school robotics team have meetings in the holidays preparing for the regional later this term.

Today I also located this amazing post from Miss Nicholas offering house tokens for students who are able to complete it and what a great idea that it is. All the instructions are there but you are required to send a photograph of your holiday to Miss Nicholas. If you're reading this post from overseas and are on holiday or its the weekend why not send a photo to Miss Nicholas of your school or what you've been up too - she'd love to receive it.

Tinkercad Virtual Classroom Design

Thank you for your visit.  Our students in New Zealand are currently on the first week of their two week end of term one holidays.  They will be returning for Term Two, 2014 on Monday 5th May 2014.

This past term we've been involved in several collaborative projects tied in with our learning.  For Mathematics we've been looking at Geometry and we were looking at working with other classrooms.  We carried out an activity in Figure it Out: Geometry - Room with a view (pg 13 of the level three book).  However we modified the activity.  We Skyped our friends at 8c Selwyn House.  We took notes when we spoke to them and followed it up with emails and further clarifications on Twitter.  We took all their information and the students processed it.  First they created a two dimensional grid map of their classroom, then we constructed a three dimensional model of their classroom using multi link cubes.  We then converted that map to a digital model.   Originally we were using Minecraft for this process.  However we've also been looking at utilising Tinkercad for our work with our 3d Printer and for various reasons we made the decision to switch to Tinkercad for this activity.

These screen shots were created by James and Logan from Room One.  The classroom that they have created the digital model of is 8C Selwyn House in Christchurch.   We haven't finished the process yet, as its the school holidays the students from Selwyn House need to process the models and we then need to adapt them from our models to ensure they've accurate.  We're then going to print their models using our 3d printer.  The question that needs to be asked:

Is this Selwyn House?
How accurate is this map?
What other changes do we need to make?

We've already completed this process with our friends from The Third Grade Thinkers from USA this work has been detailed in the blogs of Heavenlee and Brylee from Room One.   You can click on this link and see James original post.  You can click on this link and see the original post from Logan.

Auroa Primary School - Comments

This week is the last week of term one for 2014.  Students have been busy completing work before the end of term.   As part of the commenting for this week you need to ensure one task is completed from last week and complete two new commenting tasks.   The first task is to ensure that your Haiku Deck is completed about Sydney.   When this is done you need to go to 6RC and ensure that you have left a comment telling them about your Haiku Deck.  Remember that the task is under the heading of our unit for term, 'Relating to Others' and that the goal was to research facts about Sydney and have them checked as correct by someone who lives there.   If you've had a comment about your Haiku Deck identifying something that needs to be corrected then ensure that you have done this before you tell 6RC!

Commenting: Home.  You need to click on this link to Waka Endeavour.  Where is this school located?  How can you tell? Choose one post created by students and comment on it.  Remember to follow the correct format and meet the criteria expected of a comment from Room One.

Commenting #2 Away.   Where is this blog located? How can you tell where this blog is? What information can explain that? You need to choose one post from this site to highlight.  Leave a detailed comment on that post that follows our agreed process.  When that has been completed see Mr Webb.

Room One Auroa Primary School - Helping Out Room 8

Room Eight have just started a project involving digital photography with the rewards of house tokens for those students who complete the tasks.  There are two parts here were students from Room One could help out.

Read Miss Nicholas' post: what is the learning intention for this task? What is she asking to be completed? What material do you need to produce? What is the focus of the task?  Room Eight are very lucky because they have already had material posted on their page from another school.  You can click on that link here.   You can also read the original post and request here.

This post here is the one encouraging students to complete the task.  It has a detailed explanation about what is required including the Mathematics behind the task.   Remember Miss Nicholas is a creative person so the more interesting that your photographs and posts would be the more likely that she is going to like it and publish it on your blog.

Secondly she is looking for classes from anywhere to complete the task.  Who have we networked with online who might complete this task? What information would you need to give to them? How can you make sure if you complete the task that you will get the recognition that you deserve?  Assembly is this Friday which dosen't give you long to meet the deadline, however the criteria are very straight forward.,

Auroa Primary School - R1 Written Language Tasks

Hello students in Room One.  Myself and Mr Chittenden have enjoyed watching your postings from Singapore and have had an opportunity to talk about your work and share you work with educators from around the world.  You can see footage of the trip from Singapore here on the school page.

Facts about Sydney.    You need to get your facts about Sydney and Australia posted so we can notify the class from Australia so they can come and check.  We would like you to publish this task on your own blogs by using Haiku Deck to do so.   When this is finished, you need to invite the students from Australia to come and see your post.  You need to leave a comment to them on their class page, the location of which is here.

For written language there are two additional tasks this week which are part of the Student Global Blogging Challenge, this is the challenge when we have created work, like your videos/films and used the #2014gbc tag.    You can locate the master page here.

The first is to locate a 'quote' the quote needs to be attributed to a famous New Zealander  or someone who inspired you.  They need to be the persons direct words and need to be recorded with speech marks.   You need to record this in your writing books (draft) have Mrs Chittenden look and edit them and then create a display for the wall that is suitable that features the quote as the feature work.  This needs to be on A4 paper.

The second writing taks for the #2014gbc is to write about a story involving current events.   This was the homework task for last week.  You need to summarise the article making sure that you have covered the main details of the case (W/W/W/W/W/H) and you need to post this on your blog and include in your post name the #2014gbc.

Spring Lambing in England

Today in class we spent the morning block constantly watching and looking at material from our blogging friends in England from A Room With a View, Class Two. One of their students, Edward, and his family are in the midst of their Spring Lambing. In New Zealand we're currently moving towards Winter, as we're on the other side of the world. Auroa Primary School is located in Taranaki in dairy country. We have about 95% of our students who are involved either as the owners of, or workers on, dairy farms. Edward from Room With A View posted about lambing, and while our class are involved in dairy, there are a lot of similarities between what he does and our students do on a regular day. Our class viewed Edwards film, at least half a dozen times, and then brainstormed and took notes about what Edward does during the morning and the evening. We then compared that to what our students do during that time - we were surprised by the similarities.

We asked Edwards teacher, Mrs Mongahan, permission to use his video on our site:

8c Selwyn House in Minecraft

Yesterday in Mathematics our students started constructing a grid map of another classroom, in this case, Selwyn House in Christchurch. These photographs are of our Mathematics groups working. We would like to thank Tilly from 8C for her fantastic instructions and of course the teachers and students from Selwyn House for being available to collaborate with us on this project.
The next stage is to: refine our models and drawings, receive feedback to see if we are on the right track, look at the information that Tilly and Selwyn House have supplied to us, see what needs to be checked - are there any further questions that we now have? What are we not sure about?

Alyssa's Famous Comment

Alyssa from our class was extremely. extremely pleased to receive this comment from Andy Griffiths, a popular children's Author based in Australia.  Its fair to say its our most famous comment, ever.

I was excited to read the comment above this morning, I couldn't wait to show Ms Kinaston who is my support teacher and also the school librarian. We looked on his website through the library blog link. I have read The 26-storeyTreehouse and The Very Bad Book. He is a very popular author at our school. I have learned from his website that he wrote his first book in year 8 and it was called 'lost in time', he was also in a punk rock band when he left high school. Andy has advice for young writers "Practice as much as you can. It's been calculated that to become really skilled at an activity you have to practice for around 10,000 hours, so the sooner you get started the better. And read as much as you can!"
